Effective crime prevention and rebuilding public trust are at the heart of Labour’s strategy for policing.

This week, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced several measures to rebuild our police forces. 500 million pounds in extra funding, a new Police Performance Unit and National Centre for Policing are the crucial first steps to building police forces which serve our communities.

Increased scrutiny will ensure that forces like the Metropolitan Police are focussed on protecting public safety. Residents in Kingston and Surbiton have raised the impact that crime has had on them locally and Labour’s measures empowers forces to tackle these issues. This reset in policing policy sets us on the right track to decreasing knife crime, halving violence against women and girls within a decade, and keeping our homes and streets safe.

Only strong community relationships can allow our police forces to function effectively, and the Home Secretary has again stressed her commitment to reverse the erosion of neighbourhood policing which took place under the last Tory government.

With support from police bosses, Labour’s strategy is a major reset committed to returning public service to the forefront of policing.

How Labour will take back our streets:

  • Crack down on antisocial behaviour with more neighbourhood police
  • Tough new penalties for offenders
  • A plan to get knives off our streets
  • A specialist rape unit in every police force
  • A new network of Young Futures hubs
  • Create a dedicated unit to boost police performance
  • More than £500m in extra funding for forces
  • Plans to launch the National Centre of Policing to tackle emerging threats
