The government has announced a £200 million investment boost to strengthen neighbourhood policing, delivering more visible policing and tackling crime in local communities.

We’ve spoken to residents across Kingston about their experiences and concerns regarding crime and antisocial behaviour. We know how much it impacts our community.

The funding to kickstart the recruitment of 13,000 additional neighbourhood police officers, has been doubled. After years of declining police presence on Britain’s streets, this investment marks the start of a long-term commitment to restoring neighbourhood policing in areas like Kingston. By providing additional officers, improving police accountability, and strengthening crime prevention measures, the government aims to make our streets safer.

What This Means for Our Communities

  • 13,000 additional neighbourhood police officers to enhance visible, community-based policing.
  • A new Police Standards and Performance Improvement Unit to ensure high standards across forces.
  • Stronger powers to tackle crime through the Crime and Policing Bill, including:
    • Respect Orders to combat antisocial behaviour.
    • Tougher action against shoplifting and repeat offenders.
  • Continued government support to protect officer numbers.
  • More local control over policing resources, ensuring communities have a say in safety priorities.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Every neighbourhood deserves dedicated officers who know their patch, understand residents’ concerns and can tackle problems before they escalate. This investment, alongside new powers we are bringing into law, will help prevent crime and protect our communities, which is at the heart of our Plan for Change.

Restoring local policing will not happen overnight, but this funding boost will get more officers into our town centres and rural areas.”
