The Employment Rights Bill is currently going through Parliament, representing the biggest step forward for workers’ rights in a generation. Despite its vital protections, not a single one of the 72 Liberal Democrat MPs or the Conservatives supported it during the second reading.
This bill includes crucial reforms that working people need now more than ever:
•New protections against unfair fire and rehire practices
•Sick pay from day one
•A crackdown on exploitative zero-hours contracts
At a time when fair treatment and job security are more important than ever, it’s shocking that the Lib Dems and Tories refused to back these essential changes.
For 14 years, the Tories, at times propped up by their coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, have made life harder for working people. This bill offers the most significant improvement to workers’ rights in decades, yet the Lib Dems continue to show where their loyalties lie – standing in the way of progress for ordinary people.
Labour is committed to delivering real change for working people in Kingston and across the country. Stronger workers’ rights are crucial to transforming lives.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds made it clear: strengthening workers’ rights is not just good for employees—it’s good for business. Overwhelming evidence shows that 83% of managers believe that improving workers’ rights boosts productivity.
Labour is reshaping the workplace for the better, leading the charge to create fairer, more secure workplaces and will continue to fight for working people in Kingston and across the country.
