Kingston Labour Party
23rd March 2022
Tonight the council are voting on the demolition of the Kingfisher.
The Kingfisher saga has shown that the Lib Dems do not have our community’s best interests at heart, with the recommendation to approve demolition leaving the town centre without a community pool and leisure centre, and leaving just one public pool to service the whole borough in New Malden.
Have the Lib Dems inflated numbers and tried to pull the wool over the public’s eyes? They seem to love setting aside public land for private development, and simply can’t be trusted with our community assets.
The public are calling for their pool back now, not in five years time. Kingston’s schools also need access to pools as part of their curriculum. Many local families can’t afford swimming lessons, or private gym memberships.
The Kingfisher has been abandoned and left to fall into further disrepair.
Should the roof and the pool be repairable, Kingston Labour implore the council to make the right choice, reject demolition and push forward with drawing up plans to fix it.
This was an original option, but we fear it is now too late.
Residents deserve more.
