Labour GLA members Sakina Sheikh and Elly Baker visited Seething Wells.

Seeing the destruction they supported Kingston Labour’s plans to purchase the site as a community nature reserve – to enrich its important biodiversity and unique heritage in the story of London.

Sitting on the environment and planning committees at the GLA they understood the importance of retaining the site’s Metropolitan Open Land status to realise this vision.

They commented about how much potential the site had as a re-wilded wetland and how this would fit in with the Mayor of London’s biodiversity aims, as well as the importance of public access to the area.

Labour’s candidate in Surbiton, Charlie Deacon said, “We were delighted to be joined by Sakina and Elly at Seething Wells. I’m glad they shared the vision for the site put forward by Kingston Labour and other local residents. Given that the Metropolitan Open Land status is one of the strongest protections the site has against inappropriate development, it’s integral to work with our partners at the GLA and Mayor’s office who have the final say on this. I can’t wait to see the site as a thriving nature reserve, bolstering the Mayor’s re-wilding aims”.
