Get Me Home Safely

Unfortunately, many workers, especially women, are increasingly worried about their safety travelling to and from work at night.

Kingston Labour are supporting our hospitality workers, and joining Unite the Unions “Get me Home Safely Campaign”. We are calling on Kingston council to introduce a policy that ties liquor licenses to the requirement that the employer must provide free, safe transport home for late night workers, and to work with employers to use the Government’s Safety of Women at Night Fund to provide supplementary taxi travel for all employees when needed.

Labour’s Kingston Town Candidate, Kezia Coleman, says “I spent many years in Kingston, working in hospitality, in pubs, bars, and at events. I have been flashed, and had customers hanging around outside waiting for me to finish my shifts. I often couldn’t afford the extra money for a taxi with rent and bills. When public transport wasn’t available, I would have to risk my safety and walk home. We must ensure we are doing all we can to ensure safety for people. This means tackling the core issues of crime, and harassment, and put measures in place to improve safety.”

Charles Bamford, also on our Kingston Town team, runs a major community safety initiative in the Town center deploying volunteers to keep people safe in the night time and support the vulnerable. He also helps lead a local youth work charity pioneering anti knife crime projects in Kingston and beyond.
